Benifits of pregnancy and postnatal massage

Massage is an ancient practice in the child baring years

Did you know?

In many cultures across the world massage is still seen as an essential part of care in pregnancy, birth and into the postnatal period. In Chian ZuoYue Zi is a common practice for the first month after birth. Women in the community often provide food and hands on practices to support healing.

I also bring the ancient wisdom of postnatal healing into my work in the North East of England with closing the bones ceremonies. You can read more about that here.

Closing the Bones Ceremonies

Pregnancy and postnatal massage are not just nice to have. They are essential to birth preparation and to healing after birth.

Pregnancy massage benefits

Eases aching muscles, of the pelvis, legs, back and shoulders as the body changes in pregnancy

Helps to improve body mind connection - Supporting birth preparation techniques such as hypnobirthing

Improves awareness of the physical body - To support day to movement

Relaxes your mind - Pregnancy can be such a stressful time with so much change. Massage physical touch helps to soothe your nervous system.

Postnatal Massage Benefits

Supports nervous system regulation after birth - Birth is one of the biggest physical uderstnakings a human body can experiance - Weather vaginal birth or c-section birth.

Clear the body of hormones or toxins it no longer needs - High levels of adrenaline and cortisol can stay in the system after birth (even an intervention free birth) Massage especially of the legs can help to drain away these hormones so that your body can come back to state of balance

Helps you to feel safe - Having a baby in your arms is even more scary than carrying them in your tummy. Human touch reminds you that you are seen in your experience. Held and safe

The face of pregnancy and postnatal massage in the north east of england
Massage therapist in the North East of England Chloe Rose

About me

Hi, My name is Chloe. I am a mother of two. With a passion for holding women as they transition from maiden to mother and into the matriarch years.

Having children transformed my life. From structure, corporate succes and 50/60 hour working weeks to… well… mothering or at the time nothing was how I thought of it!

My journey was long hard and unsupported. Mainly because I didn’t know what I needed or how to ask for help.

After the birth of my eldest little boy almost 6 years ago I was made redundant and after the initial downward spiral I began to learn ways that I could support myself in my new job of mothering. (The job I now consider to be the most beautiful, rewarding (and challenging) role there is.)

I gained my yoga teacher certification in 2021 and have been teaching Hatha yoga, pregnancy and postnatal yoga in Morpeth Northumberland ever since.

After the birth of my little girl in 2023 I wanted to go further into really “holding space for women to heal” Hands on body work or massage has transformed my connection not only to the mothers I work with but myself too.

You see as humans we need touch to soothe. Just like your baby needs you to hold them (in utero or out the big scary world) You need to be “held” too. Literally.

And so now my job revolves around creating safe spaces for women in the North East England to explore and navigate their motherhood journey. Through Yoga, cacao ceremonies, pregnancy and postnatal massage in Morpeth, Alnwick and surrounding areas.

I have a unique blend of skills, as a former personal trainer in my early 20’s I combine my knowledge of anatomy and more recently bio mechanics to provide hands on care that really supports your body to adapt in (pregnancy) and then heal postnatally.

If you want to feel safe, seen and soothe your body thorough your motherhood journey I am here for you. In fact my work revolves around you! I am so glad you are here.

If you have any questions please do get in touch. I love to connect personally with you.

I have also popped some FAQ’s below.

FAQ’s

Where can I get a pregnancy massage in the North East of England?

I come to you. I offer pregnancy and postnatal massage to women in Morpeth, Alnwick and surrounding areas including Newcastle (Additional Travel Fee’s may apply depending in your location)

FAQ’s Pregnancy Massage

Can I have a pregnancy massage in my first trimester?

Unfortunatley you are unable to have massage from a thearpist in your first tirmester. The first trimester carries the greatiest risk of misscarriage (Although still small) most therapists will not offer massages until after the 12th week of pregnancy or your first scan. Many women often experience feelings of sickness and cramping in their first trimester too which can mean that they actually don’t want to be touched by others.

Do I have to lie on my tummy in pregnancy massage?

No, we do not put any preassure through the abdomen in pregnancy massage. You will side lie on a massage table supported with pillows to make you as comfortable as you can be. We will massage one side of your body back, leg and arm and then turn you over. We also avoid massaging any preassure points associated with labour too. To keep you and your baby safe.

Can pregnancy massage bring on labour?

Pregnancy massage is completely safe for women with low risk pregnancies. If you have a high risk pregnancy you may still be able to have a massage after a discussion with your doctors or midwife.

The onset of labour is un likely to come as a result of a massage. Massage alone in the second and third trimester will not bring on labour.

Massage does promote the feelings of saftey that you need to produce oxytocin which is the required hormone for contracting the uterus. So if you are in the final week of pregnancy and are looking to promote the right environment and feelings of saftey to encourage labour massage will help.

How often should I have a pregnancy massage?

This depends on your needs some women may have one per trimester. Others might have a pregnancy massage every two weeks. (or even weekly) Massage is a great way to prepare the body and mind for birth bringing your body into its parasympathetic state of rest and digest. This is the part of your nervous system that controls birth. So massages are going to help you prepare for labour.

Massages also improve body awareness as you have the time to really connect into the the physical feeling of the massage without distraction. This can support labour as you may be able to move your body in response to its needs with more ease and intuition.

Can pregnancy massage help with SDP or pelvic girdle pain?

Yes! 100% Although much of the research that is published in this area states that we do not know what causes this pain. After 5 years of working with women in this area and specialising in the bio mechancis of pregnancy and postnatal healing I can confidently say that pelvic girdle pain and pelvic floor dysfunction stem from a physical and/or emotional imbalance.

Massage especially when paired with gentle movement (That as a PT and yoga specilaist I can perscribe) based on your needs. Could have a significant impact on your levels of pain and symptoms both in pregnancy and in your postpartum period. Massage allows us to work and find release in the muscle (usually at the back of the body glutes, serratus which is under the shoulder and into the rib cage and the hamstrings) We cab also work to release the muscles in the feet which often contribe toward pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy and pelvic florr pain and dysfunction after birth.

FAQ’s Postnatal Massage

When can I have a massage after giving birth?

You can have a massage as soon as you feel ready. Many therapists will ask for a waiting period of 6-8 weeks after a c-section for massage however my experience and packages offer the opportunity for bespoke massage.

If you have had a c-section there is no reason we cannot masssage the head and neck, lower legs and feet to help with lymphatic drainage. Especially important after a C-section to release any of the medication that may still be in your system and to encourage blood flow into the legs reducing the risk of clotting.

What is postnatal massage good for?

Postnatal massage is gentle and bespoke to your needs. Massage increases circulation which will support healing of the whole body after birth. Massage will also bring you into a state of rest and digest. This will help to soothe stress and anxiety and in promote the production of oxytocin which for breast-feeding mothers is especially important when establishing a milk supply.

Can I bring my baby to my massage appointment?

Absolubtley! This is the most important part of your experience with me. I know how hard it is to leave your baby. (or to arrange care for them) So yes babies are so welcome. Especailly in those early weeks post partum.

If your baby is under 12 weeks we can often massage around them, (even if they want to contact nap.) I will tailor the massage to legs, feet, head, neck and shoulders.

Bigger babies, especially once they are on the move might need to be looked after by another member of your family for you to get a completely relaxing experience and need less continous feeding.

Will Massage help with abdominal separation Diastasis Recti?

Diastasis Recti is a normal part of pregnancy in fact 100% of women will have it on the day that they give birth (Full term mothers). The degree of separation is less important compared to the functionality of the alba linear (Connective tissue between the abdominal muscles) Massage can support in the reduction of tension which will aid the over all effective contraction under load of the abdominal wall.

Massage alone will not support the functionality of the abdominal wall. For that we need to focus on diaphragmatic breathing, and other muscles that support the abdomen, pelvic floor and ribcage return to its aligned position. I have an online mini course specifically created to support pelvic floor dysfunction and back pain (often present with larger diastasis Here.)
